"WRECK AND REFERENCE is quite an odd bird. The two-piece band from the left coast have lumped elements of goth, black metal, doom, industrial, noise, and all manner of darkness across their output thus far, doing it all as a two-piece and with only a sampler and drums. The sampler holds a maximum of 16 clips in its memory bank, so the amount of colors on the pallette to create an entire song and melody are limited. It makes for a fascinating live experience and a similarly fascinating recording as well…. creativity, with parameters. The band’s latest release is the No Content 7-inch, out now via The Flenser and streaming in full.
Featuring a pair of new tracks, W&R have not deviated much from their material on Black Cassette or No Youth, but that’s the best part. This Bay Area duo has found an interesting take and do it without coming off as gimmicky, considering the constraints of their set up. The use of a sampler as the primary instrument of melody, despite said limitations, seems like an advantage if it leads to output like this."
