"The Horn"
2016, Charcoal and Ink on Rives BFK, 11" X 15”

"I find that if I have some time away from drawing or creating in some capacity, I am unsettled and grumpy. It is a cousin of “hangry”, or so it feels. This drawing started with staring at abstract ink patterns I laid down on the page. I coaxed these figure out and thought about videos I saw on Youtube where inexplicable large horns sound in remote forests in Canada and throughout skies in Israel. The is a beautiful book from Taschen called The Book of Miracles. It is a full reproduction of a manuscript from the sixteenth century that depicts divine messages in natural events; floods, eclipses, earthquakes, comets etc.. Modern knowledge aside, I enjoy the explanations that come from wonder and magical thinking and chose to incorporate this into my own work. At the end of the day, the mysterious sounds aren’t being made by celestial beings, but more importantly, we know so little in the whole scope of everything.
